The Drupal Association is nominally in charge of Drupal and its development. However, Drupal is a community project in which anyone may participate.
The Drupal Association has put every effort into redirecting the community into developing Drupal 8, 9, and above, including issuing ominous proclamations of Drupal 7's End of Life, after which the Drupal Association will no longer put any effort into supporting Drupal 7.
The simple facts are:
- Drupal is licensed under GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE Version 2, so the Drupal Association may not restrict others from using the code.
- Anyone who wishes to continue to develop for and support the Drupal 7 platform may do so.
- The Drupal Association may do as they wish, and as of November 2019, the Drupal Association has chosen to use Drupal 7 for its own website in spite of four years of directing everyone else to use Drupal 8 and above.
- Drupal versions 8 and greater suffer from code bloat and complexity. Drupal 7 & YAD7 websites have a leaner fundamental codebase.
- YAD7 is an open-source Github-based fork of Drupal 7 and lies outside of the authority and control of the Drupal Association.
- YAD7 keeps up with Drupal 7 security updates.
So, if you want to use Drupal 7, but don't want to be restricted by the Drupal Association, then just use YAD7 and move forward.
